We recently ventured into the stunning South Coyote Buttes, and it was an experience we won’t soon forget!

This remote part of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness is renowned for its surreal beauty, with unique rock formations, vibrant colors, and awe-inspiring desert scenery. We were absolutely mesmerized by the vastness of the area and the incredible hiking trails that lead to some of the most spectacular views we’ve ever encountered.

The Famous "Wave" Formation

One of the most famous attractions in South Coyote Buttes is the Wave, a striking sandstone rock formation with undulating, wave-like patterns. Getting there is an adventure in itself, as visitors must obtain a permit to hike to this natural wonder. The Wave is a photographer's dream, offering incredible views with its vibrant, swirling colors that change throughout the day. The hike itself is about 3 miles round-trip, and while the terrain is challenging, the reward is more than worth it.

Opening Hours and Ticket Prices: The Wave requires a permit, which can be obtained through a lottery system. It’s open daily, with permits available for both guided and non-guided tours. The lottery for the daily permits opens four months in advance, and prices range from $7 per person for a non-guided permit to $180 for a guided tour.

The Breathtaking Paria Canyon

Another must-see spot in South Coyote Buttes is Paria Canyon, known for its dramatic rock walls, towering cliffs, and narrow slot canyons. We explored a section of the canyon, and it felt like we were walking through a vast natural cathedral. The swirling, red rock formations were unlike anything we had seen before, and the peaceful solitude of the canyon made for an unforgettable experience.

For those who love hiking and photography, this canyon is perfect. The Paria River runs through it, adding to the scenery and making it a beautiful spot for nature lovers.
