Have you ever found yourself wandering through a landscape that feels like it’s straight out of a fantasy novel? That’s exactly what happened when we visited Goblin Valley State Park in Utah.

This otherworldly place is a hidden gem nestled in the San Rafael Swell, and it truly lives up to its name with its surreal, goblin-like rock formations.

Our adventure began in the park’s main attraction: the Valley of Goblins. As we ventured through this mesmerizing terrain, the unique rock spires, hoodoos, and towers seemed to transform with every step, creating a labyrinth of geological wonders. It felt like we had stumbled into an alien world, where the eroded sandstone formations resembled whimsical goblins frozen in time.

Exploring the valley was an exhilarating experience, with each turn revealing new and bizarre shapes. We could have easily spent the entire day just marvelling at the formations and imagining their origins.

For those planning a visit, the park is open year-round from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, giving us plenty of time to explore and capture the changing light on the rocks. The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon when the sun casts dramatic shadows, enhancing the park's otherworldly atmosphere.

The entrance fee is $20 per vehicle for a day pass, which is a steal considering the experience it offers. If you’re planning a longer stay, you might want to check out the park’s campgrounds, which offer both developed and primitive options for overnight stays.

Aside from the Valley of Goblins, we took the time to delve into the park’s hiking opportunities. The Curtis Bench Trail provided stunning panoramic views of the valley and the surrounding landscapes. The trail is relatively easy, making it perfect for a leisurely hike, but be prepared for some rocky terrain. For those seeking a bit more adventure, the Goblin’s Lair Trail, with its slot canyons and intriguing rock formations, is a must-do. The cool, shaded areas of the slot canyons were a welcome respite from the sun and added an element of surprise to our hike.

We also visited the nearby Goblin Valley’s Observation Point, which offered sweeping views of the entire valley and allowed us to appreciate the scale and beauty of the formations from above. It was a perfect spot to catch our breath and take in the scenery before heading back into the valley.

If you’re planning your visit, remember to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and be prepared for a range of temperatures. The park’s remote location means that services are limited, so packing essentials is key to enjoying your visit without any hitches.
