What is Modak in Ganesh Chaturthi Festival?

Modak is the main dish made during Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra, and it is prepared in every household during this festival.

According to tradition, 21 modaks are offered to Lord Ganesha as he loves them the most.

Modaks are made without using oil or ghee, so they are also suitable for those who avoid ghee or oil. Modak is very delicious; let’s learn how to make it at home.

Ingredients:

1 cup rice flour (special modak flour is available in the market)

1 cup finely chopped raw coconut

¾ cup jaggery, cut into small pieces

Salt to taste

2 teaspoons cashews

1 teaspoon raisins

4 small cardamom pods

Method:

1. To make modak, first prepare the rice flour. Heat 1 cup of water in a pan, add salt to it, and cover it until it boils.

2. Mix the hot water with 1 cup of rice flour and let it steam for a while. While the flour is steaming, prepare the stuffing for the modaks.

3. In the same hot pan, add jaggery and heat it until it starts to melt.

4. When the jaggery melts, add the finely chopped coconut and cook both together on a low flame for a while.

5. After 3 minutes of cooking, add finely chopped cashews. Then, after a little while, add raisins. Mix everything well and don’t forget to add cardamom to the mixture.

6. Now, check the rice flour mixture you left steaming. Knead it until smooth. Continue kneading until the dough is completely smooth, then transfer it to a large bowl.

7. Take a small piece of dough, use your fingers and thumb to shape it into a round, slightly larger shape, and thin the edges. Press a little in the center and add some stuffing.

8. Seal the modak by closing it from all sides.

9. To cook the modaks and get the best taste, use a steamer. Since modaks are made by steaming, place them on a perforated plate over boiling water and steam them for 10-15 minutes.

Now, your attractive, shiny modaks are ready. We hope you won’t forget to enjoy them during Ganesh Chaturthi. Making them is very easy and you can prepare them at home quite easily.
