Clean and tidy and room and wardrobe is what everyone wants to have.Whether you are looking to store baby clothes, winter clothing, or seasonal wardrobes, it’s essential that you know how to store clothes in a storage unit the proper way.

It may seem as easy as packing boxes with clothing and loading them into your unit, but it’s a bit more complex than that. To maintain the quality of your clothing, you want to make sure it is stored properly.

This involves choosing the right storage containers, the right storage unit, and taking steps to avoid moisture and pests from ruining your clothes. Below are some important tips for how to store clothes in a storage unit.

1.Wash everything

Before you even begin to pack, you must make sure to wash all the clothing you want to store. This is crucial to maintaining the longevity of all the clothes you are storing.

Unwashed clothing can produce mold and mildew, and begin to smell if left long term. Even if your clothes don’t look or smell dirty, they may reveal stains over time.

Residual perfumes, lotions, oil, or even sweat can sit in the fabric and turn your clothing yellow. Food stains or clothes that have been starched can attract pests, which will ruin your clothing.

2.Clean out your closet

This is the most important tip. You must purge your closet if you want it to be clutter-free. Chances are you have lots of clothing that you never wear.

Why let it take up space in your closet? You can donate those items or even sell them through second-hand platform. The same goes for shoes and accessories. Let them go.

And the jeans you’re trying to fit in from before probably aren’t even in style anymore. Let them go, and if you do go down a size or three, reward yourself by buying a new pair of jeans!

3.Store off-season clothing

Most people don’t have enough closet space to hang all their clothing. Take the time to place off-season clothing into storage boxes and place in the top of your closet or under your bed. You can use vacuum bags to make the clothes easier to store.

4. Use a wardrobe box

For more delicate clothing, invest in a wardrobe box to hang your clothing. You should always avoid metal hangers, as they can cause the fabric to stretch. They may also rust in humid environments or rip clothes with their sharp edges.

Instead, invest in wooden or padded hangers for your clothing. Do not cover wardrobe boxes with plastic. Instead, cover with a cotton sheet to protect them from dust and light.

5.Use the 80/20 rule

According to the 80/20 rule, the average person only wears 20 percent of their clothes 80 percent of the time. So you should have the easiest access to the clothes you wear most often, and store them right up front and right on top.

Chances are you actually never wear most of the remaining 80 percent of your wardrobe, so you can turn all of your hangers backward at the beginning of the season, then turning each hanger forward as you wear, launder, and return the item.

At the end of the season (or year), take the clothes off whichever hangers are still backward and donate them to free up space for new things you actually love.
