Kastellorizo, an island located at the easternmost tip of Greece in the Dodecanese archipelago, is a stunning destination that boasts unique architecture and colorful houses in its main town. In its crystal-clear waters, visitors can find a myriad of small islands and marine life.
Kastellorizo, which is only 12 square kilometers in circumference and has a permanent population of just 500 people, is the most remote island within the Greek territory. It is separated from the Greek mainland by almost 600 kilometers and from the nearest Greek island, Rhodes, by 125 kilometers. Despite its remote location, Kastellorizo is only 2 kilometers away from the Turkish coast.
Bathed in the first rays of sunlight upon arrival in the Aegean Sea, the island of Kastellorizo has long been a European vacation destination. The only fully equipped beach on the island is located on the Aghios Georgios reef, which is neatly lined with sun loungers.
While Kastellorizo is a beautiful island worth visiting, other Greek islands are also worth exploring:
1. Corfu - Influenced by past Venetian, French, and British rule, the Ionian island of Corfu is full of history and has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. The Dreyer family even lived here for four years. Between the north and south are beautiful Italian-style buildings, narrow streets, and small squares.
2. Santorini Island - One of the atoll islands, its spectacular view is thanks to a volcano that erupted in the 16th century. Here you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets in the world, sunbathe on red, black, and green sand beaches, and contrast white Cycladic architecture with the deep blue Aegean Sea.
3. Kefalonia Island - With its secluded beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and breathtaking scenery, Kefalonia is one of the best Greek islands for older couples. It's a great place for calm, quiet hiking, canoeing, and experiencing wellness. The fragrant pine, cypress, and olive trees will entice you out of your accommodation for some great food. If you head to Argostoli after dark, you may see the locals singing along to the mandolin.
4. Crete - Crete is the largest and best Greek island. There's plenty to entertain you on Crete, whether it's exploring the inviting beaches, sampling the exquisite food, or getting to know the picturesque towns and cities.
5. The island of Chios - Famous for its production of frankincense, which is an aromatic resin that comes from the trees that grow in the frankincense area and form teardrop shapes. It is a relatively unexplored island, but it is one of the best Greek islands to enjoy nature, mosaics, and delicious food.
6. Kos Island - With its turquoise waters, ancient ruins, and vast beaches, Kos Island is firmly placed among the best Greek islands. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and is home to Hippocrates' Asclepion.
7. The island of Skopelos - With its tree-lined beaches, secluded coves, and chapels, it's easy to see why this island is the inspiration for popular movies. Here you can truly relax, stroll through the picturesque main town, and immerse yourself in the artistic corners.
8. Hydra Island - Hydra Island is the most couple-friendly island in Greece and is a romantic spot that you can easily reach from Athens. As there are no cars on the island, the air is very fresh. It is part of the Saronic Islands and is home to traditional stone houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and secluded squares.
